A Remarkable Japanese elm

Tree Information
Common Name: Japanese elm
Scientific name: zelkove serrata
Category: Champion (big) tree
Notes: This historic SW Washington, DC tree is the largest Japanese elm in the city and possibly the entire east coast. In 2006 it was declared the 11th largest tree in DC. by Casey Trees. It survived 1960's Urban Renewal projects and the chronic flooding that ensued, thanks in part to the care provided by Mr. Hans Johannsen, the retired caretaker of DC trees for 31 years. The tree's history probably dates to the Commodore Perry era and our country's early relationship with Japan, and possibly earlier.
