Notes: About 250 years ago, sprouts on the stump of a large American Sycamore tree grew and combined into a single, magnificent tree. In its early years it was probably admired by the inhabitants of the Smithfield Plantation, and in recent years it has given pleasure to cyclists and joggers who used the nearby bike path. The tree was particularly striking when viewed from the west on a sunny day shortly after noon. In June 2005 two major stems fell, and the tree was taken down. |
