A Remarkable shortleaf pine

Tree Information
Common Name: shortleaf pine
Scientific name: Pinus echinata
Category: Champion (big) tree
Notes: This shortleaf pine in Halifax County stands on a farm which has been in the same family for over 170 years. The large tree measures 8 feet 6 inches in circumference (2009) and stands along an old fence row, where it witnessed generations of tobacco farming. The farm was designated a Centennial Farm in 2000. Rev. Thomas P. Anderson and his wife, Elizabeth Younger Anderson are buried in the family cemetery. The oldest dated tombstone in the cemetery has a date of 1836. Rev. Anderson and his wife were founding members of McKendree United Methodist Church which shares a boundary line with the farm. It is believed that this boundary line, and old roadbed, is the same road over which President George Washington traveled on a trip through this area. The farm is presently owned by a great-great grandson of the Andersons.
