Common Name: tulip-poplar
Scientific name: Liriodendron tulipifera
Category: Historic tree
Notes: This tulip poplar tree is located in Hampton, Va. on the grounds of St. Johns Episcopal Church, the oldest English- speaking parish in America founded in 1610. The church of St. Johns is a 1728 worship building displaying beautiful colonial brickwork. The tree is weather-worn, having survived many tropical storms and hurricanes and countless northeasters. It is nonetheless majestic. It measures 182 inches in circumference. Oddly the center of the tree at the base of the trunk is largely hollow.
