A Remarkable American elm

Tree Information
Common Name: American elm
Scientific name: Ulmus americana
Category: Champion (big) tree
Notes: This is the 4th largest American elm in 2008, with 354 total points. It is growing at Mt. Hebron Cemetery, the community cemetery for the City of Winchester, VA, founded in 1844. The land adjoins the Lutheran Cemetery and the German Reform Cemetery whose graves date from the 1760's. The mighty elm that stands today was most certainly there when Mt. Hebron began and has served as the silent sentinel to the 33,000 burials. It also came through two major battles of the Civil War that took place on these grounds and stands as the living memorial to the citizens of the oldest English speaking town west of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
