A Remarkable Japanese red maple

Tree Information
Common Name: Japanese red maple
Scientific name: Acer palmatum
Category: Beautiful tree
Notes: This is one of two Japanese maples that sit side by side next to the recently restored, oldest greenhouse in America at the Oatlands Plantation, south of Leesburg. There is a picture from 1904 in the Oatlands archives showing the two little trees when they first were planted. Today they are both magnificent in size being maybe 12-15 feet in height and a spread each of over 25 feet. Several local arborists and gardeners volunteer over 24 man hours to prune these trees to the beautiful specimens they are. When you visit Oatlands, look also at the champion gingko tree just down the hill from these trees.
