Notes: This is the largest mockernut hickory in Virginia in 2006. It is growing in front of Arlington House, overlooking Arlington National Cemetery and Washington, DC. Construction of Arlington House began in 1802 under the direction of George Washington Parke Custis, the adopted grandson of George Washington, as a legacy to the first president. Thirty years later Custis' daughter Mary married Robert E. Lee, the future leader of the southern army during the Civil War. The Lee's considered Arlington House to be their home. In 1861 Union forces took over the estate as the headquarters for the Army of the Potomac.
