Notes: Editor's note: this tree was reported dead in 2015. It was the largest sassafras in Virginia, growing in a sink hole, a common feature of karst topography. It is located near the original Wilderness Road where early settlers, including Thomas Walker and Daniel Boone, passsed through the Cumberland Gap on their way to Kentucky, Ohio, and points west. Another nearby feature called White Rocks, indicated to travelers that they were only one day away from the Gap.
