Notes: The Catalpa trees at Chatham Manor in Fredericksburg, VA were there during the Civil War. Chatham was used as a hospital during the Battle of Fredericksburg, and was also occupied by Union soldiers. The trees were right behind the Union artillery that shelled the City of Fredericksburg during the battle in December 1862. Today they stand proud in what is now a much more peaceful setting.
