A Remarkable chinquapin oak

Tree Information
Common Name: chinquapin oak
Scientific name: Quercus meuhlenbergii
Category: Champion (big) tree
Notes: The Chinquapin Oak located in Luray, Virginia is remarkable on all fronts: it is a champion in size with a circumference of over 19 feet and a canopy spread of 132 feet, it is a community tree as it is located immediately adjacent to the county administration offices and therefore very visible. It is certainly beautiful during all four seasons and it is unique for its age - estimated to be at least 250 years old. This would mean this oak sprouted around 1756, twenty years before the Declaration of Independence was signed and fifty-six years before the founding of Luray in 1812.
