A Remarkable white oak

Tree Information
Common Name: white oak
Scientific name: Quercus alba
Category: Champion (big) tree
Notes: This is a state and national champion tree located in Brunswick County. The tree was originally nominated around 1970 by members of the Working 4-H's of Brusnwick Academy, a 4-H club. In 2004, the national champion white oak, the Maryland Wye oak, blew apart in a summer storm. The Brunswick oak was re-measured and declared a national champion, the status that it holds to this day. Sometime in the 1970's several of the tree's brances were headed back, significantly reducing the crown spread. The house adjacent to the tree was built in 1734. The tree is believed to be over 500 years old.
